Not long ago, mountain gorillas were on the brink of extinction. Today, they are the only great ape species in the world whose population is growing. This success is thanks to a powerful partnership between the government, conservation groups, and the communities living near Volcanoes National Park.
One of the most inspiring parts of this story is the transformation of former poachers into protectors. Many now earn a living through cultural tourism – sharing traditional dances, storytelling, and crafts. They have become guardians of the gorillas they once hunted.
At Gahinga Community Lodge, we support a cultural center that continues this work. It offers former poachers and community members sustainable income while preserving Rwandan culture. When communities benefit from conservation, they become its strongest defenders.
