The "One Sheep Per Family" Livelihood Project This project provides a direct pathway out of poverty for families who were once dependent on poaching or subsistence farming. By giving a sheep to a family: Families gain a source of food through milk and meat. They can breed sheep and sell offspring, creating a steady income stream. The project empowers families to become self-sufficient and invest in their children's education.
Conservation is at the heart of everything we do. Through our reforestation efforts, we are working to restore the forests that are vital to the health of the Virunga ecosystem. This program: Encourages guests and community members to plant trees as a lasting symbol of their visit. Helps combat deforestation and soil erosion. Contributes to the long-term survival of gorillas and other wildlife by expanding their natural habitat.
We also support organic farming projects that help local families grow nutritious food and generate sustainable income. These initiatives include: Providing training in sustainable agricultural practices. Supplying seeds and tools to community cooperatives. Creating market linkages so that locally grown produce can be sold to lodges and restaurants, reducing reliance on imported food.
